The Language of Play - Kids that Listen, Speech Therapy, Language Development, Early Intervention

*** A Top 1.5% Podcast! ***  Getting Kids to Listen, Speech Therapy, IEP, Communication with Kids, Parent Mentor

Are you tired of repeating yourself and wondering why your child still doesn’t listen?
Are you worried you might be missing something important when it comes to your child’s speech, language, or behavior?
Do arguments, whining, or meltdowns leave you feeling exhausted and unsure what to do next?

Hey parents—you don’t have to stay overwhelmed, worn down, or triggered by the daily fuss.

I’m Dinalynn Rosenbush, a mom, grandma, and Speech-Language Pathologist for over 30 years. I’ve worked with hundreds of children with speech and language challenges and navigated parenting struggles of my own. Through both training and lived experience, I learned how using specific language in intentional ways builds safety, trust, and growth. Communication isn’t just about words, it’s about how children feel when we speak to them.

I’m here to help you understand what your child is really communicating and respond in ways that build listening, speech, and connection. You’ll learn how to support communication—even with speech or language delays—set boundaries that truly help kids, and strengthen your relationship at the same time. My mission is to help busy, worried parents learn to read behavior as communication. When we understand what children are telling us, we begin to communicate differently.

These ideas work for typically developing children, kids in dual-language homes, and children with delays. When your language invites discovery, curiosity, and exploration, connection is born. Connected kids are more courageous. They listen better. They have fewer meltdowns.

In this podcast, you’ll find simple, empowering strategies you can use right away. My hope is to give you small, practical nuggets in each episode to build your communication toolbox—because what works for children with speech and language challenges, simply works!  And all parents deserve access to these skills, not just the specialists.

If you’re ready to build deeper connection and create a more peaceful, confident home, listen in!  Let’s interrupt old patterns—so you can become the parent you want to be, and your child knows is on their team.

I am glad you are here!

Dinalynn

Hey Friends~
Your kids whine … and after a while, you doubt your resolve.
“Maybe I am being too harsh.”     “Maybe one more cookie doesn’t matter.”  “Maybe they aren’t tired enough to go to sleep.”
Then, as time goes on,  you resent the situation.   You resent that you got yourself  in this situation AGAIN.   And,  in those moments, you even resent your child…  When these feelings happen, it’s easy to think we are bad parents.
Why is this so hard?
Today, we talk about  one strategy to get out of that cycle!
Always cheering you on!

Hey Friends~
IF Behavior IS Communication, then WHAT are they communicating??!
This is a common question parents ask!
Today we will dig into some common ways that kids communicate with us - IN WAYS THAT WE DON’T LIKE!
When we learn how to interpret well, we can give words to our littles so that they have other ways to communicate.  When a tantrum works, it’s because we allowed it to work.  There is no reason for the child to change the method.  ... Unless of course, YOU SET UP A REASON TO CHANGE THAT METHOD!  (Hint! Hint!)
Always cheering you on!

Hey Friends~
It is Holiday time of the year!!  No matter where you are in the world, you are quite possibly celebrating SOMETHING during these shortest days of the year!  It’s often hard to keep up with school and normal daily life - without  also adding in big celebrations.  But that is just what goes on in December!  How do we Keep the joy? Keep it light?  Remember what you are doing and what you are celebrating?
Today’s topic is how we can draw our kids into the experience.  Maybe your experience is being part of a Musical or Play or putting up decorations or making special food.   Sometimes our kids participate willingly and happily and other times they pout, whine, and worse.
Always cheering you on!

Hey Friends~
Have you ever had a book that changes how you communicate with your child?  Maybe the book showed a new way to handle a problem  - and you think, I am going to be more like Mrs. Buttercup!
Maybe that story helped you  learn how to explain something in a way that your child understands.  Maybe it is a concept, maybe a behavior.  Maybe the story even helped YOU understand the concept or behavior DIFFERENTLY.  Stories are powerful!!  Stories teach in ways that we cannot do when we speak directly.
You will enjoy today’s author, Julia Cook, as she teaches you directly about today’s youth and the current thinking patterns and mindset that is so different from how you grew up.  She explains how to reach in and connect so that you understand how your internet -connected child is learning.
Julia quotes her mentor in saying, “a story reaches a child’s mind in ways that you cannot teach in directions…. “

Hey Friends~
Holidays are a time that we create stories. Stories have the power to draw our families together and we can weave into those stories the lessons that we really want our kids to know!
Listening to stories is a fabulous way to TRAIN OUR IMAGINATION AND OUR LISTENING SKILLS at the same time!  Do you do any “Listen-Only” stories?  Human brains are developing differently now with so much  screen exposure.
Today, we have a master storyteller here with us!  Bob Hastings shares how his creativity was sparked through storytelling with his  kids and grandkids.  Then, he realized the immense impact and influence the stories had!
Don’t underestimate the power of storytelling and what YOU can do with it!!
Always cheering you on!

ABOUT THE GUEST:    When Bob's children Andrew Wood and Erin Katherine were young, Bob made up "Woody and Katie Stories" based on their middle names. Fast forward a few decades and Drew's son Arlo asked "Bear King" (the name he calls Bob) to tell him a "wind story." That prompted Bob to create this podcast series, drawing on the arc of the adventure books he loved as a kid and continuing the tradition of naming characters loosely on children's names. Grandsons Arlo is "Loar" and Oren is "Roen." Grandnieces Aurora, Delaney and Allessandra are featured, too. They visit neighborhoods where family members live.
Before he retired from the TriMet transit agency, Bob oversaw the architectural design of the Tilikum Crossing Bridge of the People over the Willamette River. He also managed the agency's alternative energy projects. Today, Bob lives in a Portland high-rise "sky cave" condo tower by the river, bridge and Ross Island. He and his wife "Bear Queen" drive an all-electric car.

Hey Friends~
Are you wondering  why your child echoes you?  Do they not really answer the question, but actually repeat what you say,  back to you?  This pattern of communication is indicative of a Gestalt Language Processor.   This pattern is common among kiddos with autism. Kids without autism  may also use this pattern of language, though it is most common in the very early years.
How do you manage this?
Always respond
Be a sleuth - figure out what that echo might represent
Embrace their attempts to communicate
Understand this is a script
Listen in for examples and ideas for how to respond, what to look for, understanding the scripts, and how to increase your child’s  interactive language in supportive ways.

Always cheering you on!

Hey Friends~
Walking the road of parenting is hard.  It is filled with joy and struggles.  We are okay to feel the way we feel.  No matter what you feel about it.   Learning to let go of negative judgment and condemning thoughts about our feelings  is critical to be authentically yourself.  Parents are often  able to do this with their kids,  but continue to struggle to be so kind to themselves.   If this is you, you will LOVE today’s Episode with Susanna Peace Lovell, author of Your True Self is Enough.
Susanna’s daughter wrote in the forward of the book,  “Learn to understand your child rather than make them do what you think is normal.”
When you learn from your child who they are, instead of trying to create them to be who we want them to be, we free ourselves to do the same for ourselves.
You will be glad you tuned in to this encouraging and authentic episode.
Always cheering you on!
